I’ve noticed something lately, back in the late ’90′s Matt Drudge’s site The Drudge Report was the talk of the town. People would make it their homepage and refresh it frequently just to see what the newest story breaking was. Drudge and his site was deemed a revolution, a fundamental shift from the old media to the new media and he was the guiding light.
How times change. Now this is hardly the case. Drudge seems almost like old media. His site rarely has timely information and lately it seems he is getting stories after the traditional media. Additionally it seems he has moved from what he was, a great site for rumor & breaking news, to spewing his own party line (NOTE: I am a fiscally conservative, socially liberal republican by nature).
The real action now is in the blogsphere. Watching the war in Iraq through a “blog” & foreign press perspective has really opened up the possibilities of this “new” medium. When the history of blogging is written my guess is that the Iraq war will figure markedly in that and The Command Post and other sites like it will be mentioned.
The real question for me is why Drudge hasn’t moved or expanded his site to include some sort of blogging? I’ve listened to him on the radio and he certainly has some interesting things to say outside of simply posting links to stories. Seems like Matt is missing the next wave in media….
